daddy wants to roleplay
"Dad, this cheese is weird," Samantha was saying while Graham puttered around at the stove. Graham looked up, meeting her frown with a smirk.
"It's pretty good considering there aren't any cows on this planet," Graham said, chuckling when his daughter rolls her eyes at him.
"I like it," Greg was saying around his mouthful of grilled cheese, the only thing Graham could cook.
"Thanks, buddy," Graham says, ruffling his son's hair, "But don't talk with your mouth full." Graham put the last grilled cheese sandwich on a plate and set it down, checking his watch.
"A friend of mine is coming over tonight, to meet you guys. You're gonna like him."
"Really?" Sam says, perking up, "Is he a Korzan? My friend Amanda said that all Korzans are gay. Is that true?" Graham went white at that question but recovered quickly, laughing awkwardly.
"It's not-- It's not really that simple, They don't really, uh, do things the way humans do," Graham answered, and Sam made a noise like she wasn't convinced, "But yes, he's a Korzan. His name is Vhan. I've known him since I was a teenager."
This was the first time he'd seen his kids since moving to Korza, and he'd sorely missed them. It had been three months, and part of the reason it had taken so long was that he'd had to promise Victoria that he'd stay sober the whole time they were here. He intended to keep his promise, but he'd only picked hem up this morning and he was already feeling the itch.

Graham's message hadn't said much, just to come over, which usually meant he wanted to screw around, get high, or both. He was pretty happy with the way things were between them, now, even if it wasn't quite how he'd hoped it would be when he was a stupid kid barely above the legal drinking age who thought they could settle down and be soulmates or something. He wanted more, sure, but this was as much as he could have asked for, and he was learning to enjoy what he had.
He stops on his doorstep and wipes his feet before knocking, then pulls his jacket tighter around him and tries to finish smoking before Graham opens the door.

"Vhan, hey! Say hi, Sam!" Graham said, walking up behind Sam and ruffling her hair. She startled, still looking up at Vhan with big eyes.
"Hi."

"Oh...hey," he says, a look of confusion on his face, but he smiles at her through it.
"Are you...oh...OH, you're...Sam?" he says, snapping his fingers as he makes the connection. "Yeah, Sam, right? Is your dad here?"
no subject
"Dad!" she calls, still half hiding behind the door as Graham comes out of the kitchen holding two plates with a grilled cheese sandwich on each.
"Hey, Vhan! You're just in time, I cooked!" he holds up the two plates like they hold the most delicious, complicated to prepare food on the planet, "I see you met Sam," he says, nodding to his daughter, "Greg is around here somewhere. Greg?" Graham looks around, startling a little when he realizes his son is a step behind him, peering around his leg at the stranger in the doorway.
"Sam, Greg, this is Vhan."

"Hey," he says, grinning and squatting down in front of Greg to meet his eye level. He grins, taking care not to show too many of his sharp, jagged teeth - human kids tended to scare easily at the sight of them.
"How do you like it here? Sorry about our weird cheese, I know it's not like you have back home. Your dad complains about it all the time."

"It's colder here. At home it's summer," Greg says, and Graham runs his hand over his head affectionately before offering a plate to Vhan.
"That's because they don't have summer here kiddo," Graham says, still smiling. He can't deny that he's felt sunnier with his kids around, even if it's only been a couple of hours. He can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon than with so many of his favorite people in the same room.
"What was my dad like in high school?" Sam asks suddenly, from where she's perched herself on the couch.

"What was your dad like in high school," he repeats softly, around a mouthful of grilled cheese, "Well, he got in trouble a lot. We both did. Once we both ran off from one of our class trips to set off fireworks and swim in the lake. Turns out, though, the lake was full of...I dunno what to call them. I guess they're kind of what you guys call leeches, right? We had to strip down and search each other for these things, and in the middle of doing that, the rest of the class walked up and found us almost naked, there, in the middle of the woods, picking these bugs off each others' asses - uh, shit, I mean, bottoms? I mean, not shit, crap, right? Uh, anyway, yeah, the kids were all laughing and the teachers were trying to get everyone to settle down, but, you know, they were trying not to laugh at us too. We got up to stuff like that a lot. Usually less embarrassing than that."

"Oh my god, I forgot about that!" Graham says, laughing, and Sam looks impressed.
Same continues to shoot Vhan rapid and unending questions, while Graham looks on with a pleased and surprised look on his face. He'd been excited for Vhan to finally meet his kids, but he hadn't really anticipated that Vhan would be so good with them. It was impressive, really, and it made something feel heavy and warm and important in his chest.

Soon, the suggestion is put forward that they watch something on TV, and Vhan had used Graham's tablet (with a little coaching from the kids; He'd hardly ever used one of these, they were much too nice for anyone else he knew to afford) to find one of his favorite movies he used to watch when he was a kid, and had put it up on the big display for them. It was an old superhero flick, one he remembered had a couple of human characters in it.
He was stretched out on the couch next to Graham, now, and was very conscious of the slim amount of space between them. He can't imagine he'd ever want the kids to think there was anything going on between him and their dad, so he's careful to keep an appropriate distance from him.
"Oh, this is a good part," he says, distracting himself from thinking anything too despondent, "And they filmed this whole part in one take, too."

Graham can't exactly put his finger on why, but the whole situation is making him want to pin Vhan against the wall and kiss him silly. Honestly, if he wasn't sure every single detail of this week would reported back to Victoria, he might do just that. Instead he takes a quick glance to ensure the kids are focused on the movie and leans back, stretching his arm out along the back of the couch behind Vhan and shifting over until their sides are brushing. He keeps his eyes on the movie but can't help smiling as he gently strokes the back of Vhan's head.

Graham turns throughtlessly to press a kiss against the side of Vhan's head and then pauses, realizing halfway through the movement what he'd just been thinking about. He'd been comparing his relationship with his ex-wife to this thing with Vhan, this thing that couldn't quite be classified as dating but wasn't really casual either.
That thought is terrifying, but what's more terrifying is how he doesn't want to move an inch from this spot.
