The last couple of weeks of the summer had been a rollercoaster. First, there had been the culmination of a summer of silence from X-Ray's family. It was the whole reason he'd ended up at the camp in the first place; his social worker hadn't been able to get in touch with his mom, and rather than immediately chuck him into a foster home the camp had stepped in. It had still only been a stopover, just an extension giving his social worker more time to find some family.

But, predictably, they hadn't found anyone. X-Ray's phone calls hadn't even been returned by any of his extended family. Conner had brought him into the farmhouse and sat him down to tell him about all of this, how the social worker was lining up a foster home for him, and X-Ray had sat down hard, his head spinning with despair.

This summer had been the best he'd ever had. The other campers had been nice and friendly, and after the first couple of weeks when X-Ray had relaxed more he'd made friends with nearly everyone. And then there was Torque. X-Ray's initial efforts to maintain distance between them had gone disastrously; mostly because Torque could never take a hint. What had started as a slight interest and general mistrust had evolved into a full-blown, blushing-at-the-drop-of-a-hat crush. Torque was turning eighteen in a few months and no longer qualified for the camp program, so the prospect of not only having to leave this place he had grown to love so dearly, but also never seeing the boy he was probably in love with ever again had X-Ray on the verge of tears, and his powers activating so his eyes cycled brightly through colors.

Conner and Gavin had both helped him learn about his powers and learn to control them, not to mention they were the first adults to ever treat him with respect and care, and when Conner scooted up next to him and put his arm around him, X-Ray wanted to cry all the more.

But Conner had suggested, gently, that if X-Ray wanted him and Gavin could be his foster parents, and they would take care of him until he was old enough to take care of himself. That had been the final straw; X-Ray really had started to cry and buried his face in Conner's shoulder, reveling in the comfort of Conner's arms wrapped around him.

So, it wasn't so bad in the end, but Torque was still leaving. Even after the paperwork making Conner and Gavin his foster parents had been finalized, X-Ray stayed in his cabin with Torque. But now the end of the summer had come and they were both packing up; X-Ray to move into the spare room in the farm house, and Torque back to his family.

X-Ray was quiet as they were packing but he kept glancing over at Torque, furtive little glances like he wanted to take every chance he could to remember this moment forever.
